The Build
A menacing custom Mercury built for actor Johnny Depp — a modern take on the classic lead sled that pairs vintage lines with modern chassis engineering.
Johnny Depp's '51 Merc had spent years in storage and needed real structural work — including a full floorboard — before it could roll again. Bodie fitted a 300-horse Ford 5.0 crate engine to a C6 automatic modified with clutch plates in low and reverse, then dropped the whole car onto a RideTech air-ride so it drives like a modern car with the silhouette of a chopped Mercury.
- Built for Johnny Depp

- Modern Ford drivetrain hidden inside period Merc bodywork
Vehicle History
The 1951 Mercury is the definitive lead sled — the car that defined the chopped, lowered custom style of the 1950s. Immortalized in films like Rebel Without a Cause, the '49–'51 Merc remains the most iconic custom canvas in hot rod history.
